Lately I've been drawn to Greek mythology. It fascinates me how these guys that existed thousands of years ago dreamed so much more than the average man today would. So I thought I should write about these guys! Icarus Is my favorite character. He and his father were prisoners, his father was a great craftsman so in an attempt to escape, he fashioned two pairs of wings made out of wax and feathers. He warned his son not to fly too close to the sun and the sea but Icarus was overwhelmed by the freedom that he got from flying and so he got too close to the sun and it melted his wings and he fell to his death. Now this might seem like such a tragic incident but its been a great source inspiration for me lately, its a reminder that no matter how free, rich or famous we get, we should never get carried away, we shouldn't let ourselves become prisoners to the giddiness that the height brings. Another thing that fascinates me about the story of Icarus is the fact that emphasis have only been laid on his flight rather than his fall, its the Flight of Icarus that has been recorded, the fall is just a tiny fragment of the myth, so is the flight really worth the fall??? I wonder!. Anyways sometimes we get caught up in the speed of the fast lives we live or hope to live, we want to soar and we want to reach heights that we've only dreamed about we want to be the best we can be, but is it possible to get to the top without falling? (Michael Jackson. Elvis Presley, Fela) Okay! Let the story of Icarus be a reminder to all of us, lets try not to fly too far on borrowed wings or too close to the sun and if we do fall,(God forbid) lets pray we hit the ground running! Okay so this is my first post ever and I' gonna dedicate it to the bands that have shaped my musical life in one way or the other. These are bands that I've known for a while and own all their records! Some are old, some not so old but they're all fantastic and have influenced my sound in a huge way! I'm new to this blog thingy so pardon me, this might not be the most educating thing you've read in a while, its just one music lover letting you in on his favorite bands! Enjoy!
I First came in contact wit this band when I heard their song 'Where are you going?' on the "Mr Deeds" soundtrack. It caught my ears and i just knew I wanted to have that song! Anyways DMB is fronted by South African born Dave Matthews and their music is a blend of Jazz, Soul and Blues music. My favorite song of theirs is "Crash Into Me", and I think they should have won Best Rock album at this year's Grammy awards. Great Band!!!
At Number 9 Sigur Ros
I discovered this band a few months ago and fell in love with their music. Jonsi Birgisson, the front man has this falsetto voice that gives you nothing short of an "eargasm". Their lyrics are in Icelandic and hopelandish(a language the band made up that's actually just Gibberish). Even as i don't understand a word of what their saying, I'm more than consoled by the beautiful sound they make. My favorite song is "Inni Mer Syngur Vitleysingur" You should check them out!
This is a band with members from Scotland and Ireland. I came across Snow Patrol when I used to host the alternative music show with Uwem Bassey on 97.6fm. Their song "Run" was always on our play-list. I like this band cos they can pull off a mid-tempo song that you can bump your head to, a fast track that you can listen to you in your car but most importantly, they pull off the most amazing power rock ballads like 'Run' and 'Chasing Cars'. I think this is one of the best bands from the UK and they are gonna be around for a very long time! My fave song is 'Beginning to get to me'.
Arguably the second greatest British band of all-time, just behind the Beatles. Fueled by short fuses and Sibling Rivalry, the Gallagher brothers went on to achieve super-stardom with albums like 'Be here', 'What's the story morning glory'(my favorite) and other great ones. Too bad they had to split up last year. Their song Wonderwall has been called the greatest british song ever written, and i agree cos its my favorite Oasis song.
Why do I love Bloc Party??? May be cos the lead singer is Nigerian-born Kele Okereke or cos their music is just so fucking amazing. I discovered Bloc Party just randomly surfing the net and It took me a while to adjust to their sound cos its a bit unusual. I think the first song I heard was 'The Prayer', very weird tune. Well If you're a gossip girl fan you can hear their song "Signs" being played immediately after Chuck's dad's burial, that scene is was just ecstatic for me. My favorite Bloc Party song is "I still remember"
i Don't need to say much about this band. They really impressed me with their "Death and All is Friends album" It's cool to see a band that really does their homework and knows how to balance being dark with achieving mainstream success and winning a shit-load of awards. My Favorite Coldplay song is "Politik". Oh and Btw their song 'Reign of love' Is the song I'll dance to at my wedding!
Number 4 The Cranberries
Another Irish band, my second favorite. Dolores O'Riordan has such unique voice, one of the most recognizable female voices in rock and roll. I've been hooked from the first time I heard 'Dreams' on the radio to when Dolores made a cameo in Adam Sandler's movie "Click" Singing my personal favorite 'Dreams'. I wonder why they split up.
Bon Jovi is one of the world's most successful bands and I can relate to most of their songs. I have a friend that loves this band to pieces. My only worry for this band is that their sound has not changed since the 80s, they sound the same, its the same Bon Jovi you hear on "Slippery when Wet" that you hear on "New Jersey " and "Full Circle" Their only album that sounded a bit different was "Lost Highway" and some of their fans have called it their worst album. Anyways I love this band and "you want to make a memory" is my fave!
Number 2 The Goo Goo Dolls
To me Johnny Rzeznik (lead singer) is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. From writing about an aborted pregnancy on "Slide" to writing about his memories of orphan-hood on "Name", to contributing the song "Iris" to the 'City Of Angels' Johnny Rzeznik merges simple guitar chord progressions and unusual tuning patterns with a longing for meaning. Simple, yet deep and thought provoking, his lyrics have touched my life in a great way and that's why The Goo Goo dolls are number two on this list! "Black Balloon" is my fave!
Check for the word "Charisma" in your dictionary and you just might find a picture of Bono under it. I'm proud to say I own all their 15 albums, from the Joshua tree to "Boy" to "Pop" to "All that you can't leave behind"(my best) to their latest "No Line On the Horizon". U2's career spans over 30 years and unlike Bon Jovi, their sound keeps changing, they keep doing new things. A friend once told me that being in a U2 concert is like being in church and you're filled with the Holy Spirit. Only U2 can tell story of an Irish band moving to America and taking over completely from the yanks. I even heard that Bono Addressed our national assembly sometime in 2004(I heard O!). 'I think with or without you is one of the best love songs ever written. My favorite album is 'All That You Cant Leave Behind' and my favorite song is "Bad"
